In the latest episode of Figuring Out, I had the opportunity to have Honey Singh as my guest. We had an intense discussion about his early days and his upcoming projects. He said, when he made songs, he was always confident that they would be superhits, and he used to work on the albums accordingly. But with the advent of short form content, he feels he needs to survey the market and do his homework before making a comeback.

Short form content has seen a sharp rise in the last two years. With the growth of social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok, short form content has declared its supremacy. Yes, it has some very obvious advantages. It is easy to create, can be shared quickly, and all social media channels are pushing it constantly. But there are limitations to their appeal. Let’s find out areas where short form content struggles.

1. Lack of depth

Short form content generally means videos with a duration of 30 seconds or so, or news articles with less than 1000 words. Short form content, by definition, is brief and concise. You can learn many subjects from these contents.

However, when you need thorough information regarding something, they may seem limiting. Trying to understand a complex subject through this form will not give you the grasp of its background or context.

2. Inspiration recedes

When you are a creator, you have an intense urge to create more. With short form content, the audience may get bored too quickly. A song, a hook step, a dialogue, a piece of new information stays for only a few days before it starts losing relevance.

The main characteristic of creators or artists is their ability to be unique and creative. So, if they get too stressed to create the next big thing before one thing ends, they may lose inspiration. To ensure your brand keeps growing, it is always best to create content based on what you want to create and not focus on its length or duration.

3. Limited reach

Short form content can also be limiting in terms of search engine optimization (SEO). Short form content may rank low in search results because search engines prioritize longer content that provides in-depth information on a particular topic. This can make it difficult for businesses to attract organic traffic to their website, harming their overall marketing strategy. Maintaining a brand legacy and standing out often becomes difficult with short form content.

Both long and short forms of content have their pros and cons. When creating content, it is up to you what form of content you want to use for maximum engagement. Short form content is the most accepted. However, you can always experiment and discover what’s working for your brand by listening to your audience.
