The one and only Honey Singh was a guest on my podcast Figuring Out. We had quite a heartfelt conversation about many things, including his early days in the industry. He considers himself lucky to have got the chance to work with Bollywood’s biggest stars. Though he never had so-called friends in the industry, he always had mentors he likes to refer to as godfathers.

If you think about it, mentorship plays an essential role in any organization. Mentorship benefits both the mentee and the mentor, and both have something to take back from the process. Let’s talk about why a mentorship program in an organization is important.

1. Develops confidence

When an employee is put into a mentorship program, it helps them get acquainted with the work culture. They also gather experience and learn about new work. For a fresher, adjusting to a corporate culture may feel complicated. A good mentor can ease the process of merging. Not having confidence in the initial days of work is common, especially for people who are still learning and getting familiarized with the process.

A mentor, with their acquired knowledge, can help you master the work, which in turn will build the mentee’s confidence. Having intrepid employees who know what they are doing also benefits the organization.

2. Builds company loyalty

Employee retention, loyalty, and engagement are crucial for a company’s growth. In personal relationships, too, we seek loyal partners. Why will it be any different in a corporate structure? Loyalty develops over shared experiences and proven credibility. And who can help you with that? A mentor. Mentorship programs can boost this sense of loyalty.

As employees participate in the mentorship program, they are getting invested. Employees get to learn what the company has to offer them in return for their service. And that can build on the employees’ loyalty to your company.

3. Helps the mentor

By investing their time in a new appointee, the mentors also have something to gain. It will help them improve their communication skills and they can learn many new things in the process.

Besides sharing their knowledge and helping less-experienced juniors, it allows them to give back and can lead to much-needed satisfaction in their career. When they realize they can make a difference in their mentee’s career, it helps them become more responsible and committed to the company.

A mentorship program is a two-way process. When you invest in someone, you also get a lot in return. Apart from those mentioned above, mentorship also helps form future leaders, inculcating a sense of discipline amongst the mentees and many more.
