How to Find Luck in Life — 5 Ways
An average person would look at somebody successful and, without missing a beat, give their “luck” a lot of credit. Now, there have been innumerable debates on what luck is. While we have some extreme believers, many haven’t figured out the true meaning of luck and how to make it work for them. In this episode of Figuring Out, I had a fantastic chance to chat with Sahil Bloom- Managing Partner at SRB Ventures and an author. We both feel we have been extremely lucky in our lives, but a lot of that was self-curated. If you want to know how to create your own luck to win in life, make sure you are considering these 5 things-
1. Blind luck
Of the 5 kinds of luck that we believe there are, blind luck is the kind that you are given or born with. It’s the luck you are born with. Where you were born, who you were born to, and your circumstances. These are things that you can’t change and have no control over. You might have the blind luck of having a marketing genius as your neighbor, and together you two decide to build something amazing. You had no play in it, it was the ‘chance’ you were gifted.
2. Luck from motion
Now, this is where you start to intervene. In order to have more luck in life, you have to create a certain energy around you by hustling. Once you have got enough movement by meeting more people, being in the right city, and building meaningful relationships, you will have created enough collisions in life that luck might strike you. A lot of the “being at the right place, at the right time” philosophy comes from creating this movement of energy for yourself.
3. Building awareness
When you have done your homework and given yourself enough exposure, you start to spot luck. You can see chance coming from a mile away. The way to build this awareness is by putting yourself out there so often that you develop a keen sense and knowledge about how the industry works and, more importantly, how the industry’s people work. Creating this awareness about a given space pushes you to a position of seeking that lurking opportunity.
4. Lean into your unique
It’s crazy that we have not yet fully realized that power is in our unique qualities. Focus on your hobbies and interest. Because your interest already acts as a motivator for you to lean in more and gain profound knowledge in that specific area. Once you have mastered something, instead of you doing the chasing, you become the sought-after person because of your extensive knowledge that no one has. Imagine someone who was a nerd about cryptocurrency for the last ten years- the person right now would be one of the most sought-after people because they have been dealing with this subject for a decade, and no one can beat them in their game! People might call it luck, but it’s the perseverance and doing what was right for them for all these years that is paying off now.
5. A combination of all of the above
I firmly believe that to truly be lucky, you have to take what you are given and then hustle to make ways to get luckier with time. I have been fortunate with the family I was born into. So I took the luck my parents offered in the form of them letting me follow my passion and went off on a tangent to build on my passion. I asked for help, networked heavily, and placed myself in situations where I would bump into other passionate business people and soak up the knowledge they were offering. This listicle should help you get the basics right. Take a piece of paper, write these down, and plan out the roadmap for the next 6 months where you create motion, gain awareness, maintain uniqueness, and are humble enough to fail but get back up multiple times.
Make sure this year you are genuinely happy about friends who are doing well in life. Chances are people who you think ‘got lucky’ created that luck for them. And now, you can too.
