We always associate nervousness with negative emotions. Parents have advised us since childhood: be confident, do not be nervous. What if I tell you there are benefits to nervousness? No, I am not kidding. In fact, psychologists also agree.

In the last episode of my podcast, Figuring Out, I had a very special guest — singer and songwriter Armaan Malik. He has been performing on stage since he was 9 years old. He said that nervousness has proved beneficial for him. Let’s find out 3 reasons being nervous is good.

1. It makes you work harder

Nervousness stems from being under confident. So, when you are nervous about an exam, a performance, or a presentation, it makes you work harder, study harder and practice more. Anxiety is often triggered in the body’s fight-or-flee mode. It is like an alarm that does not have a snooze button.

Yes, it makes you think about all the bad scenarios. However, that also keeps you in check. You will not waste time and focus on readying yourself. Let’s say you are organizing an event. Being anxious means you will check and recheck every tiny detail and create backups in case anything goes wrong. The final result? A flawless event.

2. If you are scared, it means you care

When you are passionate about accomplishing your big goals, it is okay to be a bit scared. That’s what keeps you motivated and helps unleash your true potential. Your nervousness is proof that you care deeply. So, what do you do next? You prepare yourself to face your worst fears.

Have you noticed how your productivity increases when you are under a lot of pressure? Start taking nervousness as a positive thing that fuels you to work before the deadlines.

3. It makes you an empathetic leader

When a leader is anxious, take it as a positive sign, because that means they have planned out every possible outcome and what may go wrong. This prepares them to face any sudden challenge. Nervousness makes you a good decision-maker. You calculate everything and then make a decision, so they are less likely to fail.

It helps you be empathetic and understand what others are going through. You can recognize the traits of somebody being nervous, and you can help them. That’s what makes a good leader — someone who is not impulsive but takes each step cautiously.

Having said all these, it is equally important to remember that if you are facing anxiety daily or if it’s escalating to a panic attack, you must seek professional help. Don’t push yourself too hard. Be kind to yourself above everything. Understand why you are being anxious and then deal with it accordingly. Take deep breaths and chin up for the road ahead.
