We recently celebrated World Mental Health Day and the reason we need to celebrate such a day is pretty clear. Just as we take care of our physical health and consult a doctor at the slightest inconvenience, we need to do the same for our mental health. We need to be aware of our “mood” and get serious with it. No matter what job you are doing, no matter where you are in life, your mental health can deteriorate anytime. Here are five things you need to do to take care of your mental health.

1. Well, it’s not always a bad day

Just like I said before, be aware of your emotional needs and changes. If you are feeling under the weather for quite some time, if you are not feeling good, it might not be as trivial as you think it is. Sit with yourself, write down what’s on your mind, and slowly start to unravel. In most cases, we will be able to narrow it down to one or two issues. If it’s something beyond your control, then it’s better not to think about it much. However, if it’s causing you to feel suffocated, anxious, and unable to think clearly, it’s a good idea to seek help. You can turn to someone you trust or consider consulting a professional to get the support you need.

2. Don’t keep your emotions bottled up

We often tend to keep our emotions bottled up, especially those of us who are introverts. But what happens as a result is that these emotions pile up and start gnawing at us from the inside. So never do that. Now, there are situations where you cannot where you can’t immediately express your emotions, where you have to smile and be polite. In that scenario write down all your feelings in a journal, write whatever you are feeling — the anger, the disappointment, write until you feel a sense of calm. You can also try coloring books for adults, they can be surprisingly effective in helping you relax and enhance your focus.

3. Having someone to talk to

It can be your best friend, your partner, your parents or your colleague. But it always helps to have someone you can rant out and talk to and know they are there when you need them. Whenever we feel bad, or things do not go our way, we tend to isolate ourselves. Do not do that, it would agitate you further. Spend time with them in person if possible, or just have a chat. Connecting with someone can make a world of difference.

4. Give yourself time

It is important that you get off the virtual world and give some moment to yourself. Consider taking yourself out to movies or dinner dates, just to see if you enjoy your own company. If you don’t, you might want to start working on that. When you spend more time with yourself, you will understand yourself better and you will understand your triggers and comfort places more.

5. Physical health, diet and meditation

Nothing you haven’t already heard and yet this is a reminder that you need to exercise daily and meditate. These habits can help you stay physically fit, emotionally calm, and gain better control over your emotions. Plus, they give you more quality time for yourself. Have good and healthy food and stay fit. And meditation can help calm those voices in your head to a great extent.

It also helps when you are kind to yourself and you acknowledge your feelings instead of dismissing them. We all are still trying to figure out the nuances of mental health and well-being, but trying these might help you. So, take care of yourself and never ever hesitate to seek help.
