Viral is a word we have all heard for the past few years. Anything can get viral — a picture, a song, a video, or a blog as long as it is on the internet. But, of course, things can get viral for all the wrong reasons. But we do not want that. We want people to recognize us for our talent and creativity. On my podcast, Figuring Out, I recently talked to Harrdy Sandhu, the king of viral songs. And we discussed the proper methods you can apply to make your work tick all the right boxes.

1. Understanding your audience

Who will make your content viral? Your target audience. So, the first step is to identify who they are. Once that is clear, you research what they like. What are they doing these days? What are they seeing? Who are they listening to? You can conduct this survey via social media or just ask your friends, family, or acquaintances. When you have an idea of the framework, you can fit your work into that mold. And if you want whatever you post to trend, you must make a considerable fan following.

2. Timing should be impeccable

So many things happened because someone was there at the right time and place. Absorb this popular phrase into your life and prepare your content accordingly. Even reuse old content if you find something relevant to the subject is trending. Be active on social media; you will know when to post what. Also, lousy timing might considerably affect your growth and bring in the trolling and memes. Say, Team India has performed well in a tournament; there is no point in posting content from your Himachal tour. Be very aware of the time and place.

3. Hop on to new trends

Not the ideal way, but probably the easiest way to go viral. You will see phases where a particular picture, video, or line from a movie is getting posted, re-posted, or re-re-posted. So do not let that opportunity go; hop on that trend. Now, how can you be different? Apply your creativity and give it your twist. It will be fresh content, and people will enjoy watching or reading something different.

4. Keep that emotional connection

Funny or witty content makes us laugh, but it is not long-lasting. You need to have an emotional base to create a place in your audience’s mind and heart. There are a lot of sensitive issues that get shoved under the carpet, and no one pays heed to them. Even if they do, it’s the same tiring narratives. So, pick up one of the social issues and make something engaging and poignant about it. If it is good, your views will increase, and people will share your content, thus leading to the final destination, ‘viral city.’

5. Quality vs quantity

You may have the urge to post about everything. But it is for the best if you do not. Filter creative ideas that you see, or that come to your mind. Apply only those that are relevant to your voice or your brand. Just because everyone is doing it doesn’t mean you have to do it as well. But yes, be consistent. Select three days of the week you want to post. That way, you can focus on the quality. Also, be mindful of the format of the content you are posting. Do not switch too often. And you will see the growth right in front of you.

Most importantly, to get your content viral, you have to be patient. Rome was not built in one day. So stay active, be aware of the trends and changes, and you will get there slowly but surely. But making viral content is generally the first step. To keep up with the flow, you need to be consistent and maintain the same quality; thus, your overall audience will grow. And then whatever you post will be trending and viral!
