Chief Strategy Officers (CSO) are responsible for strategy execution in the company. They usually report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and help with rapid and effective decision-making. They are prompt to detect and analyze market changes. Furthermore, they often lead high-impact projects that can shape the trajectory of the business.
This role almost requires one to be a jack of all trades. However, there are some skills you will find in most successful CSOs, and here are 5 such skills.
1. Vision
Many people contribute to a company’s success. From the human resource team to the marketing team, every department plays a crucial role. However, their purpose and plan of action need to be tied together to ensure they work toward accomplishing the same mission.
CSOs play an important role in mapping out this mission. Their ability to visualize the company’s future decides which department should carry out which duty. When the CSO paints this vision clearly for others, they stay motivated to fulfill the goals.
2. Communication
CSOs must have excellent communication skills. Conveying the vision and strategies of the company across departments is crucial to ensure everyone is on the same page. Communication also includes listening and understanding the team members.
Misunderstandings, disagreements, arguments, and poor quality of work are often the results of a lack of cohesive two-way communication.
Apart from other teammates, CSOs need to connect with clients and stakeholders. From presenting their plans in a meeting to issuing a company-wide memo, communication skills will be necessary at every step.
3. Leadership
Leadership skills are essential for CSOs. They need to look over many departments to ensure the efficiency of the strategy. However, they can’t execute every task related to the plan. So, they need to delegate tasks and manage teams without losing sight of the big picture.
CSOs are responsible for making difficult decisions. That requires problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze data. However, time is of the essence here. No matter how difficult the findings are, there is always a time crunch. To maintain the highest efficiency, CSOs need to be quick. And you can find this typical quality in most great leaders.
4. Understanding
To ensure they are working toward the company’s best interest, CSOs first need to understand the core values of that company. They also need to pay attention to the inner workings of the business processes.
They cannot develop the most efficient business strategy without considering the efficiency of other departments. Wasted efforts by any employee add up to the wasted effort of the company as a whole. CSOs need to combat that to ensure a well-structured organization. This requires a deep understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the business.
5. Mentorship
Since CSOs oversee many teams, they need to play the role of an advisor. They often need to guide departments on how to implement a particular strategy. They also evaluate the existing model periodically to ensure it is up to date with the current market scenario.
Although most successful CSOs pride themselves on being a doer rather than an enabler, there is only so much you can do as a single person. Enabling others by showing them the best path to reach a particular goal is often the most logical method.
Mastering all these skills may seem challenging, but the responsibilities of a Chief Strategy Officer are already quite tricky. The dynamic nature of strategy development, followed by its execution, demands you to always be on your toes. The good news is, like most things, these skills can be learned.
