Eyes are the most neglected part of our body. It is the source of light, the window to the world, allowing us to see and perceive everything around us. And truly it is one of the most overworked body parts. But are we truly giving them the care they deserve? Unfortunately, for many, the answer is no. The proof — redness, itching, and tired-looking dark circles around our eyes. I recently talked to Dr. Rahil Chaudhary, who is a record-breaking ophthalmologist who has a Guinness World Record for 250 laser eye surgeries. And here are 5 things he suggested.

1. 20:20:20 rule

Our eyes are not made to withstand the digital blue light. Definitely not at a stretch. Taking regular breaks is the simplest way to give your eyes some much-needed rest. Take a break every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. And you will see your eyes relaxing slowly. And if you see that it still is not, you are still getting blurry visions, maybe you should contact your ophthalmologist.

2. Regular eye exams

One of the most fundamental aspects of caring for your optical health is scheduling regular eye exams. These check-ups, conducted by optometrists or ophthalmologists, can detect early signs of vision problems, eye diseases, or other health issues. It’s recommended to have an eye exam at least once every two years for adults and more frequently for those with pre-existing eye conditions or a family history of eye diseases.

By catching issues early, you can prevent them from worsening and get the appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration can lead to vision loss if not managed early.

3. Protect your eyes from UV radiation

The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be harmful to your eyes. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can increase the risk of cataracts and other eye conditions. To protect your eyes from UV damage, wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays when you’re outdoors. Additionally, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat to provide extra shade for your eyes.

4. Maintaining a healthy diet

It is true what moms say — a good diet can fix everything. Okay. Almost everything. You want to take care of bad skin, bad hair, and improve your optical health? You have to eat a healthy diet. Foods rich in nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, and vitamins C and E can help prevent age-related vision problems. Incorporate foods like salmon, leafy greens, citrus fruits, and nuts into your diet. Obesity is also linked to bad eye health, so you need to take care of that as well.

5. Avoid rubbing your eyes and DIY treatments

We often do this. We take the onus of treating our eyes all by ourselves — completely forgetting what harm it may do to us. We should absolutely contact doctors even if it’s a minor inconvenience. Because you might just aggravate the problem by a few degrees by self treating it. Additionally, the habit of rubbing our eyes is one that should be changed immediately. Apart from other concerns, it can transfer dust and bacteria from our hands into our eyes, and we all know that’s a scenario we’d rather avoid.

Whether you have perfect vision or rely on corrective lenses, there are several ways to promote and protect your optical health. Taking care of your optical health is crucial for maintaining good vision and preventing eye diseases.
