3 Ways to Impress Your Investors
Getting your investors to invest in your venture is no child’s play. You have to prove yourself and your business worthy of their time and money. And then keeping your promises and meeting all your financial targets are crucial to maintaining their support. Recently, on my podcast, Figuring Out, I was talking to Tarun Mehta, the Co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy. As someone who has been through this whole process of running behind investors and getting the job done, he had helpful insight into this topic.
1. Be ready with everything.
And I mean everything, starting from your laptop to pen to notebook. You don’t want to mess anything up in your investor pitch. So, make sure to revise and practice thoroughly. Run and re-run all your devices that you would need the next day. Everything needs to be perfect. You cannot give half-cooked efforts and expect a standing ovation in return. Also, carry all necessary documents relating to your business and yourself. You never know which they will want to see when. You should keep yourself prepared for everything. However, do not go too overboard with the presentation. Keep everything to the point, but explain sufficiently.
2. Give them a holistic idea
They must have a clear idea of what they are getting into. Share the entire story — how your business began, the inspiration behind it, and what makes your offerings unique for your customer base. Your company has at least 4–5 competitors, if not more. Make sure you thoroughly convince your investors that you stand out from the rest and that you deserve the money. Be frank with them and give them the exact budget allocations and your long-term plans. Remember, everyone will want to see their profit. So, you need to show them how their money will be not only returned but also turned into a profit!
3. Research your investor
Find out everything you can about them. You will see a pattern, the kind of companies they like, and you will know what they want to hear. Tailor your presentation accordingly. Not everyone has the same mode of functioning, the same story, or the same values. It differs from person to person. And your pitch should get customized accordingly. No, I am not asking you to go be someone else. That would cause more trouble. But just get yourself done as per the liking of your investor. Just like you wouldn’t offer the same things to all deities, don’t expect everyone to be equally impressed by the same words or pitch.
Impressing your investors involves more than just hitting financial targets. It requires a holistic approach. By sticking to these qualities, you will impress your investors and build a solid and enduring partnership that benefits both parties in the long run.
