Currently, the largest youth population in the world is in India. A country’s youth offers a huge confidence and strength, which is why most developed nations consider India a threat to their reign. However, despite having the most youth, India is still not perceived as a ‘skilled’ economy. This acts as an obstacle to the country’s growth and negatively impacts the pace at which India is moving forward. In this episode of Figuring Out, I conversed with renowned journalist R. N. Bhaskar and chanced upon three potential ways India can become unstoppable and emerge as a superpower.

1. Educating the youth

“Pen is mightier than the sword” can be an old saying, but it still holds true. The only way our society can move upward is by educating the masses. Without proper education, you won’t have the right understanding of society. School education is the basis of a lot of things. Primary and secondary education are the building blocks of higher studies, where you can deepen your knowledge of specific things. But our country must work hard to make this a reality for most. According to India’s largest NGO, Pratham, 50% of 8th-standard kids today cannot read 2nd-standard books. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult for these kids to go out into the world and get better jobs. Reversing this rapidly and efficiently can do great things for our country.

2. Tax exemption

Education needs to be accessible to more people. If the government can exempt all taxes from higher education institutions, knowledge already becomes more affordable. With most of the country still living below the poverty line, it’s a given that not everyone can afford a good education. But doing this also runs the risk of a drop in education quality. To counter that, there can be yearly output evaluations for schools where external teams come in to evaluate the students and maintain a high standard of education.

3. Encourage the youth to question

There can’t be any betterment without conflict. While it’s a good idea to be a well-mannered, contributing citizen, some take it too far and never end up thinking for themselves. Questioning anything and everything around you is how you train yourself to have original thoughts. To build a better future for all, we first need to identify the issues in our current state. Once that’s done, the focus can shift to rebuilding.

India has adopted a fast-paced digital transformation, essential to emerging as a superpower. With the advanced technology in our hands and the hub of the world’s biggest talent pool, India will birth a new tomorrow by educating more people.
