There are hundreds of varieties, if not more, of smartphones available in the market. Each comes with something unique. If you are an influencer or gamer you would choose a smartphone that comes with the best battery life, fabulous camera and makes the process of game playing or video editing as seamless as possible. But say when you are an average person who wants to do a bit of everything, what do you do? For most people, buying a smartphone is an investment so you have to select the best before buying. On my podcast, Figuring Out, I recently talked to Nipun Marya, CEO of one of the fastest growing mobile brands in India, IQOO. According to him, this is what you need to keep in mind before making a decision.

1. Doing a thorough research

You need to do some research by yourself before buying a phone. Do it both online and offline. Fix your budget and find out what are the most popular phones these days on that budget. Do not listen to the suggestion of a friend or family member because you will be the one using the phone, so it should fit your criterias perfectly. Each phone will have different features. Some phones will have processor A and another will have processor B. When you read up and research, you will get a good understanding. You must test the touch and feel as well, because it is going to stay with you 24*7. Then do a review of word of mouth — what others are saying. And eventually, you will find your phone.

2. Memory of a phone

One of the most important features to consider while buying a phone — its memory. Any smartphone has two kinds of memory — Random Access memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (ROM). RAM determines how smoothly your phone will run and ROM is the storage. Now you see, our phone has literally everything from photos to notes to documents to email to contact numbers, just to name a few. So, it is important that you get a phone with good storage. Mostly the range of storage varies from 32 GB to 128 GB. It is my understanding that for a decent phone which you will use for at least two to two and a half years, you should go for a phone with at least 3–4 GB RAM and 64 GB ROM. And ofcourse, from here, the more the merrier. Keep in mind that the price of a phone varies with the memory.

3. Battery life

Another important factor. Smartphones are something we use for at least 10–12 hours per day, if not more. So, it needs to have a decent battery backup. You obviously do not want to run out of charge in the middle of a meeting or an online class. So, you must check the battery before you buy. On an average, you stream videos, use your camera, use apps so your smartphone must have at least 3500mAh battery or above. It is also advisable that you keep the charger you are provided with from the company carefully. In case of wear and tear, you must replace it with an original to elongate your phone life.

There are other things as well, like cameras. Even if it is not a priority, it doesn’t hurt to have a good one which will help you click a gorgeous selfie. Along with it, take a note of the size of the phone. Anything more than 6 inches can be uncomfortable to hold in hand. And of course, the type of processors play a key role as well. So, when choosing your next phone, keep these points in mind and grab the one that perfectly suits your needs and personality!
