3 Things a Founder Should Have
If we look closely at the numbers, running a startup is not so easy. You just cannot be struck by an idea and get in Forbes 30 under 30 overnight. It takes a lot. Recently, on my podcast, Figuring Out, I invited Mohit Sadaani. If this name doesn’t ring a bell, let me tell you another — The Mom’s Co. Mohit Sadaani co-founded the company with his wife when he realized the absence of maternity clothes in the market. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. Talking with him has been a solid hour of talking about entrepreneurs, changing the wave of business in India, and more. Here are three things this stellar founder suggests to you — the next entrepreneur in the making.
1. Crazy amount of drive
Value often emerges when you do something others don’t believe in. If everybody else was doing it, it wouldn’t have worked out. Sometimes, you might start a company that requires you to approach manufacturers with a bold and unconventional idea. Many will refuse to walk the uncharted path. People will call your vision crazy and impossible. But you need to have the drive inside you. That fire and passion will help you push yourself. And seeing you work so hard will inspire people around you to join your journey. It might just be the world against you. But your hard work and that zeal to go on will push you over to the other side.
2. Be the captain
You have to always remember that what you are starting is a team sport. And you have to be the captain and steer your ship in the right direction. You will need people who are good at what they do. You will supervise and guide them. You have to take your entire team onto the path. Because this success cannot be achieved solo. So, if you are a solo founder enjoying running the whole show yourself, find a suitable niche. But if you know how to get the best out of people or have collaborated with people previously, your chances of success are much higher. There’s no way one can take care of everything in the business.
3. Having numbers at the back of your head
You need to have the complete picture, the vision board, right in front of you. You may not be working in it, but you should know what’s happening in every step of your business. You should also be clear about what number you want to hit, and how much you want to upscale your business. There are people whose idea is brilliant, and the execution is equally impressive, but they do not know what’s happening in their business. And it will always backfire because others in the chain would like to take you for a ride. So always keep in touch with your employees, and in case of any development or denouement, loop in your employees as well.
Apart from these, you must create your prodigy who will take the company forward in your absence. You must create an inclusive work culture so your employees are at ease. You also have to make sure none of your employees are overworked, including yourself. And so the list goes on and on. However, all you need to do is get started with the basics, and the rest will follow suit.
