What is your business niche? It is exceptionally entertaining and inspiring to learn about massively successful businesses and how they started from ground zero, overcame obstacles, and emerged victorious. Sometimes the company is built on a crazy idea that no one previously thought about, or sometimes the product type is so familiar that it is bewildering to consider how it succeeded despite the fierce competition. However, there is an equal number of failed businesses, or perhaps more. A company’s profitability is usually the first thing we factor in while trying to venture into any business. Whether your product can make money is undoubtedly a key metric of success, but that is not the only one. To turn that profit, it is fundamental to find a niche. A deciding factor between success and failure can often be whether you can correctly target your niche market.

1. What are your interests and passions?

The first thing to consider when you think of starting something new is whether you like it or not. Putting your heart and soul into your business and spending sleepless nights worrying over it does seem somewhat easy when you are spending your energy doing what you love. Trying to convince others why they should like your product or service when you do not appreciate it yourself can be draining.
An easy way to find out about things you like is to sit down with a pen and paper. Jot down what interests you, that you often find yourself learning more about, that people compliment you on. There may be things you are already skilled in, or people come to you for a solution on this. Now you have a list of things you are passionate about.

2. Survey the audience

The next step would be finding out which of these skills can be helpful to people at the moment and in the long run. Why do they need this product or service? And why is your business in a unique position to offer it? For instance, there may be thousands of companies selling bags. But all of them may not be laptop-friendly. You are fond of travelling and find the idea of leaving behind your devices dreadful. So, your niche can be selling gadget-friendly bags for people on the go.
This requires a thorough analysis of the market and people your business will cater to. Surveying your audience and how your business can resolve an issue they face is a must while attempting to discover your niche.

3. Analyze your competition

The next crucial step is scrutinizing your competition. It offers a direct perspective on what works and what does not in that particular domain. You can always rely on Google to check out the level of competition for a specific product or service by doing some simple keyword research. Going through the first few pages and the listed websites will suggest how your competitors are reaching their target audience and what you can do to emulate their success, if not surpass it.
You will also come across a few businesses that differ from your vision or seem off-putting according to your sensibilities. It will help you segregate your target audience further. You can then make a list of plans and missions for your enterprise based on your niche market.

While we may not mind being a Jack of all trades, being a master of none can be terrifying. So, these 3 steps can be helpful if you are struggling to find a niche for your business. Hard work and perseverance are two of the essential traits to be successful. But all of it can go to waste if you fail to capture your niche market.

Though spending your time doing homework is advisable, only doing homework and planning the subsequent steps can be counterproductive. While there is no fool-proof method that can guarantee absolute success, investing yourself in doing what you love while offering something unique to your customers can sure feel fulfilling. And screening your competition before venturing into the territory certainly increases the odds of triumph.
