Gaurav Taneja, came to my podcast Figuring Out, recently. We had a heart to heart talk regarding a lot of topics. But the highlight of the conversation was his career, particularly the time he was a lawyer. He had come a long way since then. So, we got talking, and here I am telling you the reasons why, if you are dreaming of becoming a lawyer, it can be the best thing for you.

1. Being an active part of the society

When you become a lawyer, you can actively be a part of the society and help those in need. In India, there’s a backlog of thousands of pending cases due to the shortage of legal personnel. There are many underprivileged people unable to pursue their cases due to financial constraints, leading to a lack of justice. As you become a lawyer you can represent these people and help them seek justice. You will be taking an active part in making the society better, putting the bad guys behind bars and helping the innocents. Being a lawyer is a tricky business, you have to know what you’re doing and believe in it and only then will you be able to present a case. We always talk about making a difference and here’s your shot at it.

2. The opportunity

When you do any work diligently, the opportunity for growth is unprecedented. As a lawyer, you not only have the opportunity for professional advancement but also the allure of the legal profession. Those who wear the white and black coats carry the entire responsibility of justice on them. You can reach as high a position as Chief Justice of India (CJI). It will not happen overnight or in five to ten years. It would take more than that. But you can. To deliver justice, to understand the nuances of the society — the opportunity is huge. The legal profession is also characterized by a structured hierarchy, and with experience, lawyers often ascend the ranks to become partners in law firms. These positions not only offer significant financial benefits but also carry immense prestige and influence.

3. Diverse practice areas and specializations

In India, the legal profession is not limited to a single practice area but encompasses a wide range of specialties. This diversity of practice areas allows lawyers to choose a field that aligns with their interests and skills, making it easier to excel in their chosen niche. Some of the popular practice areas in India include criminal law, family law, corporate law, intellectual property law, environmental law, tax law, and more. The specialization and expertise gained in these fields can significantly enhance a lawyer’s earning potential. Specialized lawyers are often sought after for their in-depth knowledge and skills, and they can charge premium rates for their services.

The legal profession in India offers not only a fulfilling career path but also the potential for substantial financial rewards. Aspiring lawyers in India have a bright and financially rewarding future to look forward to, provided they are dedicated, passionate, and committed to their chosen path in the legal world.
