3 Reasons Why AI Can’t Replace Musicians
We have seen AI’s impact on our lives for decades now. There’s been the advancement of technology in every aspect of our lives. In the entertainment industry, films have become dependent on VFX and CGI. With the onset of auto-tuning, mixing, and so much more, we have also seen technology strengthening its ground in the music industry. As ChatGPT and Google Bard have entered the scene, many people are worried they will take over jobs such as designing, coding, writing, and even script writing. So let’s find out how and whether AI will affect the music industry.
1. Creativity cannot be replaced
AI can imitate someone else and reproduce lyrics and tunes. But we still need a human mind to express emotions through lyrics. If you look at the numbers that topped all streaming platforms, you will notice a pattern. And that is, they either have relatable lyrics or catchy music. And it would not have been made possible by AI.
Even if you see the different genres of music — pop, rock, jazz, blues, hip hop, country music; or our very own classical, folk, Sufi, bhajan, and so many more. Humans have brought forth all these because it was the need of the age. Lyricists and composers take inspiration from real life and create memorable songs, something AI, bound by the limitations of its programming, cannot replicate.
2. Feel of live music
I was recently talking about why music festivals and concerts are so popular. Getting the opportunity to see your favorite performer up close is a lifetime experience. And also, bonding with absolute strangers over a song is a unique experience. People spend a fortune buying tickets for festivals, and rightly so. While AI can generate music and performances, it cannot replicate the electric atmosphere and the human connection that live music offers.
Musicians establish an emotional bond with their audience through live performances. No one would want to see an AI-generated performance or conversion, no matter how technically proficient it is.
3. Artistic innovation
While AI-generated music can be technically proficient and polished, it lacks the unpredictability and artistic flair that human creativity brings. Musicians thrive on the freedom to take risks, blend genres, and explore unconventional ideas, often leading to entirely new music movements. Confined within its programming parameters, AI struggles to capture the essence of artistic exploration and expression that is the lifeblood of the music industry.
Short-form content is popular now, but even then, the audio-visual component needs to be done perfectly to capture attention. While AI can ease the process or technically contribute to it, the raw materials are to be supplied by humans.
What is inevitable will happen. AI will get better at producing music. But no one can replace musicians. Music heals people. It helps us through difficult phases of our lives; it’s a part of us even when we are celebrating. We need actual humans who have been through that emotion, not AI, which only thrives on pre-written codes.
