3 Reasons Love Works Better Than Fear or Incentive
In my previous podcast episodes, many eminent guests have appeared — from business leaders to internet sensations. However, this was the first time an IAS officer came to the show. Naturally, I was excited. We had an extremely meaningful conversation on several topics. Most of them revolved around India’s growth. We also discussed how India is becoming one of the fastest-growing countries in the world. We further spoke at length about the secret behind this advancement. The ideology of love, respect, and values our parents and elders instilled in us plays a crucial role in this growth.
The magnificent IAS Abhishek Singh then talked about how India can influence people globally with the ideology of love, unlike other countries who want to exert their domination through data colonization and economic expansion. India has become the talent bank of the world. The same ideology of love, affection, and respect for one another is also what makes an organization thrive and is the finest way to influence people around you. Let’s delve into why love has higher leverage over fear and incentive.
1. Impact of fear
Who hasn’t heard the name of Adolf Hitler? We are all aware of how he had brought half of the world within his grasp.
How did he do it?
- By inculcating fear.
But did it work? Was it ultimately fruitful?
- No.
It succumbed along with his death which leads us to the fact that making people do something by using your power has transient results.
Even at an organization level, if your employees fear you, they will obey your instructions without any questions. However, that is not how an organization grows. There won’t be any trust and the culture will become slowly toxic.
2. Game of incentive
Incentives can be a tempting proposition to make someone work for you, and it mostly works. Mostly. Because, the thing is, more work equals more incentive. True, the job gets done eventually, but you, too, lose money in the process. So ultimately, the result is null, and in the long run, this won’t suffice.
Incentive, be it in cash or in terms of favor can be provided by anybody in power. If you want to distinguish yourself and your organization from the mad race, this impetus will not work.
3. Love conquers all
Love is a powerful emotion and not just in the romantic aspect. If you can make your employees, business partners, or subordinates love and respect you, you will gain nothing but the utmost respect. There will be no limitation to what you get in return. Showing affection can go a long way. The passion to do and achieve more will come from love and affection. Being respectful and loving is a two-way road; you get only as much as you give.
This bonding formed purely out of respect and devotion will make your organization stand out from the rest. Even when you are not there, people will still remember you and work for you.
India’s culture has always been of love and affection. As a country, whatever we have done and achieved has been done through reverence. India has always wanted to be a world leader without seeking to achieve world domination. Look at what we have achieved through that. If you want to build a brand that will be remembered and revered by all, this should be your only gameplan : love, respect and affection.
