We have hosted so many guests for the Figuring Out podcast that one day I sat down to recognize a pattern in people I like to chat with. There were a few obvious things that I find truly valuable, and all my guests fall under the same category. Amit Jain, Co-founder of CarDekho, is an extremely passionate and driven entrepreneur. And he found success in a tier-2 city in India, breaking the myth that only metro cities can give birth to unicorns. He has immense experience in dealing with employees from tier-2 and tier-3 cities. So how does he find the most talented people? By first identifying talent and then nurturing them. Here are 3 skills you need to make an impact in any capacity in today’s entrepreneurial world.

1. Be coachable

Learning from others is one of the most incredible life skills, let alone in business. While businesses need to change the mindset that only highly skilled people should step in and do the work for them, as employees, it’s important that you can soak in all the nurturing you receive. If you are a talented individual, know that turning that talent into a usable skill makes you much more valuable. Your talent in its raw form doesn’t have enough real-world value. When you see a good opportunity, focus highly on upskilling, be open to coaching, and you’ll learn things that no college can ever teach you.

2. Communicate strongly

Our entire society is built on a solid foundation of communication. From maintaining peace between countries to billion-dollar deals, everything is made possible through effective communication. For people to fully understand your thoughts and ideas, you need to use the most effective and accurate words to explain where you are coming from. Lack of clear communication often leads to team misunderstandings and can quickly escalate to falling outs. A simple way to communicate effectively would be to practice listening intently and asking more questions to gain clarity than spending time formulating a fitting response. Remember that communication is a two-way street.

3. Learn to persevere

As a general rule of thumb, entrepreneurs are essentially failures. Because to be an entrepreneurial kind, you need to innovate, and the only way you can build something that the whole world needs is by going through hundreds of iterations of the same idea. Almost every successful entrepreneur I have interacted with or read about has one thing in common- they all think they have done something unique but continue to have that hunger to do even better! There will always be something new to master, a new skill to learn, and a new business to invest in. Persevere through the worst time to see how that takes you forward exponentially.

Once you have mastered these skills, focus on building self-esteem. You will have to stand up for yourself and bet on yourself throughout your life. Start today.
