Failure and rejection are part of life. We have all faced rejection at some point in our life and probably will do so in future as well. The worst part about rejection is the effect it has on your mental health. Your confidence breaks, you start questioning yourself and your dreams and eventually you would want to give up. Whether it’s a job application, an investor pitch or a creative endeavor, rejection can be challenging to handle. So here are three ways to handle failure and rejection as suggested by Shiv Khera, the best-selling author.

1. Have faith in yourself

When we believe in ourselves, our actions do not need external validation. It is only when we are lacking in confidence that we start seeking validation from others. If you want to succeed, it is very important to believe in yourself. That is literally the first step. Because if you start doubting yourself, how do you expect the world to have faith in you? Building confidence to navigate rejection and failure requires resilience and self-compassion.

Start by forgiving yourself for things that didn’t work out, but don’t forget the lessons. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer to a friend facing rejection. Avoid negative self-talk and instead focus on your strengths and past achievements.

2. Learning from the experience

All failures teach us something. And a man who is truly dedicated will rise up even after 100 failures because he is dead set on the goal. Be that person. Develop that kind of thinking in yourself. Take the time to reflect on the experience and identify areas for improvement. Did you lack certain skills or qualifications? Was there a misalignment in values or expectations?

By reframing rejection as an opportunity to learn, you shift the focus from self-blame to constructive self-evaluation. Embrace the feedback, if available, and use it to fuel your personal and professional development. Every rejection becomes a chance to refine your goals, hone your skills, and emerge stronger and more resilient.

3. Motivating yourself

Push yourself harder. Remember your competitors are not resting, so you must not either. Turn that frustration, anger, that feeling of loss into motivation. Do not extinguish that fire within yourself. Consider rejection not as a roadblock but as a detour leading you to unexplored paths. Many successful individuals credit their achievements to the perseverance that rejection instilled in them.

By transforming rejection into motivation, you not only overcome setbacks but also emerge more determined and focused on your long-term objectives.

Understand that rejection is a universal experience and even the most successful individuals have faced it atleast once in their lives. So it is okay. Without rejection you will not learn, the best version of you will not come out. Remember diamond is the result of intense pressure on carbon. Any change that is coming your way will take time.
